Dengue death toll in Cebu now 34
At least 34 people, mostly children, have died due to the mosquito-borne dengue disease in the city since January of this year, the City Epidemiology Statistics and Surveillance Unit (CESSU) revealed.
CESSU Assistant Head Durinda Macasocol said the figure is still lower than the 49 recorded deaths on the same period of last year. So far 1,670 persons have been confined in different hospitals in Cebu City since January after they were bitten by dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Macasocol said health officials are now implementing another way to minimize, if not to totally eliminate, the problem of dengue virus through the new procedure of applying chemicals to curtains and mosquito nets.
She explained that the health officials will go to the barangays and will ask the constituents of the place to bring their clean curtains and mosquito nets to be soaked into a basin of water laced with chemicals.
“One the strategies we are conducting to help prevent dengue fever infection is the impregnation of curtains and mosquito nets with chemicals that will kill the adult aedes,” she said, referring to the dengue-carrying mosquito aedes aegypti.
Macasocol explained that the chemical that they are using has been proven very effective against mosquitoes. #
