Despite the local government’s relentless efforts in trying to eradicate the dreaded dengue disease in the community, the mosquito-borne illness continues its rampage in the city by claiming the life of a three-year-old boy.

The latest fatality brings to 11 the number of persons who died due to dengue in Cebu City since January of this year, data at the City Epidemiology Statistics and Surveillance Unit (CESSU) revealed.

The latest victim, the three-year-old boy from sitio A. Lopez in barangay Labangon, died on July 1 just hours after he was brought to the Cebu City Medical Center, said CESSU officer Dorenda Macasucol.

Macasucol told reporters that the condition of the boy was already serious when he was rushed to the hospital. She said the boy was already suffering from blood clot, causing the blood to stop circulating.

The boy was the third persons who died of dengue in the same area and the city health officials are now closely monitoring the place to prevent another death caused by dengue, which was earlier described by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña as worse than cancer.

Since January this year, 11 persons have died from dengue. Three of these came from barangay Labangon, two from barangay Lorega-San Miguel, and one each from barangays Camputhaw, Guadalupe, Talamban, Binaliw, Sudlon Ii, and Mambaling.
