CEBU CITY – Policemen in Central Visayas, especially in Cebu, are on heightened alert following the terrorist attacks in the financial capital of India that have killed at least 100 persons.
Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Ronald Roderos yesterday, however, said the intelligence group has not received any direct threat from terrorist groups but he stressed that the heightened alert was raised to avert any possible attacks.
“Until now we have not received any threats or presence of suspicious groups but we have to be proactive,” said Roderos.
He assured though that with the security structure of the PRO 7 and with the assistance of various intelligence groups, including the Barangay Intelligence Network, no group can enter Visayas, especially Cebu, easily.
Management of hotels and resorts have already been forewarned but Roderos stressed that the current security measures in five-star hotels here are enough to thwart any attempt of sowing terror.
“We don’t have immediate threat right now but we are always on alert,” said Roderos.
Roderos said the raising of heightened alert in the region came after teams of gunmen stormed luxury hotels, a popular restaurant, a crowded train station, and a Jewish group’s headquarters in India’s financial capital, killing at least 104 people, taking Westerners hostage, and leaving parts of the city under siege Thursday.
A group of suspected Muslim militants claimed responsibility.
Police and gunmen were exchanging gunfire at two luxury hotels and dozens of people were believed held hostage or trapped inside the besieged buildings. Pradeep Indulkar, a senior official at the Maharashtra state Home Ministry said 104 people were killed and 287 wounded.
Officials said eight militants had also been killed in the coordinated attacks on at least 10 sites that began around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. #
